E-PORTFOLIO

Recuerdos Preciosos

Recuerdos Preciosos came from the Spanish words which means Precious Memories. This portfolio is the collection of the important memories I had in my Field Study and Practice Teaching journey. It includes my teaching philosophy, outputs, daily journals, proofs in attaining competencies for beginning teachers based on SEMAST, and assessment tools that aligned with the qualifications of Philippine Professional Standard for Teachers (PPST) Domains.

As part of the final requirement in my Practice Teaching course, I made this E-Portfolio to creatively document my notable achievements, sacrifices, and success in my chosen field. This is the proof that I was able to complete the tasks given to me in my internship. It showcases my capability as a beginning teacher.

This portfolio will lead you to my most precious memories. It will tell you my story as an individual who never stop dreaming. All the memories I kept here will be my secret weapon to finally reached the peak of my success.

I’m part of Arts and Culture Educator Society (ACES) who promotes the beauty and the essence of arts in our country. We are the warriors that uses CULTURE AND arts as our weapon to educate and strengthen the identity of the Filipino people. Also, I am a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). We are conducting educational programs, as well as charity and community works. Of course, I am planning to look for a job that will perfectly fit to my chosen profession. I’m planning to have work while preparing myself for the Licensure Examination for Teachers. If I will be given a chance I really want to be a Special Education teacher. One of my dream is to help blind students to appreciate the arts and to give them the educational needs that they deserve.

Everything in this world is continuously changing, from simple things to more complex ones, from small things into much bigger ones. We cannot stop these changes happening in the world, but we can go along with these changes by letting ourselves learn. I have learned a lot from MY bachelor’s degree, from filtering information, classroom management, and creating assessments tools. The communication, Creativity, Collaboration, Critical thinking skills are something that I embodied for four years of studying in the Philippine Normal University. These knowledge and skills I acquired will be my key to let the students effectively learn from me. If learning is a never ending process, then I’ll never get tired of it.

PHILIPPINE

NORMAL

UNIVERSITY

The phrase “normal school” is traceable to the French “école normale”, the institution for higher learning in France in the 18th century.

The present Philippine Normal University was originally the Philippine Normal School (PNS), the first institution of higher learning established during the American occupation of the Philippines. Created by Act No. 74 of the Philippine Commission, it gave Filipinos training in the science of teaching. The PNS formally opened on September 1, 1901, with Mr. Elmer B. Bryan as its first superintendent. Seven other Americans succeeded him before the designation of Mr. Manuel Escarilla as the first Filipino superintendent in 1939.

With the signing of the charter, Republic Act No. 416 on June 18, 1949 during the term of President Elpidio Quirino, PNS was converted into the Philippine Normal College, authorized to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees in education. Republic Act 6515 mandated the offering of doctorate and other academic programs relevant to the training of teachers. On December 6, 1991, the Philippine Normal College was converted into the Philippine Normal University. Finally, on January 12, 1992, it was elevated into a full-fledged university by President Corazon C. Aquino.

In recognition of its continued leadership in teacher education, PNU was designated as the National Center for Teacher Education by virtue of R.A. 9647 on June 30, 2009.

The main campus of the University is in the City of Manila with branches in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur; Alicia, Isabela; Cadiz City, Negros Occidental; and Lopez, Quezon.

Use of Jamboard in facilitating class activities. Students are able to freely share their insights. I was able to utilize the Zoom Chat Box feature in asking for the learner's questions or clarifications about the topics being discussed.

SYNTHESIS

I know that I was able to perform well in this competency, but then it wasn't enough. I know that I need to learn more teaching strategies and master my content, and find out my best teaching style that is effective for the learning style of my students. Based on my experience, I can show more I am willing to explore new strategies to make learning and teaching meaningful for my students.

DOMAIN 2

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

1. Demonstrate knowledge of policies, guidelines and procedures that provide safe and secure learning environments.

In order to guide students on what they are allowed to do and what they are not, it is important to establish rules and etiquettes in the classroom. This also sets the tone of my classroom, so it's essential to remind them of it. Then, students eventually programmed to follow the rules, and I no longer need to remind them.

2. Demonstrate understanding of learning environments that promote fairness, respect and care to encourage learning.

This is a copy of my demo teaching, where I encouraged my other students to participate in class guaranteed that their answers will be acknowledged without judgment.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of managing classroom structure that engages learners, individually or in groups, in meaningful exploration, discovery and hands-on activities within the available physical learning environments.

Encouraged the students to participate in class Activity through dance.

Here, I taught the students how to dance the Sinulog Festival Dance and they need to stand up and open their cameras to guarantee that they are actively participating in class. They were asked to dance the Singulog Festival Dance with the appropriate musical accompaniment. Everyone in class participated in this lively activity.

4. Demonstrate understanding of supportive learning environments that nurture and inspire learner participation.

In this class, I encouraged students to closely watch the video and share in the class their observation. I made sure to nurture and inspire the learners by recognizing the effort they made in observing the videos and having the courage to participate in class discussions.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of learning environments that motivate learners to work productively by assuming responsibility for their own learning.

Utilizing the Google Classroom in assigning Asynchronous Tasks in order to let students work and learn in their own time. It promotes productivity and discipline in managing their time.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of positive and non-violent discipline in the management of learner behavior.

Fortunately for me, I have never experience having a non-responsive learner. However, I noticed that it's always the same set of students who are answering. So, in this class, you will notice that I am enforcing everyone to make sure their cameras are open, so I know they're still listening and I still got their full attention in our class discussion.

SYNTHESIS

Since my teaching and learning environment took place virtually, it's hard for me to assess if I was able to promote a safe, positive and engaging environment for the students. But then, based on the evidence that I have I think I am successful. The areas that I need to improve in this competency is to be resourceful, create hands-on activities within the available physical learning environment. Then, I haven't encountered any severe misbehavior from my students, so I believed that I was able to manage my virtual classroom. However, the management of a face -to-face classroom is different so I need to prepare for it when learning to go back to the usual setting.

DOMAIN 3

DIVERSITY OF LEARNERS

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of differentiated teaching to suit the learners’ gender, needs, strengths, interests and experiences.

I made sure that as a 21st-Century Educator, I am equipping myself with the necessary knowledge to understand and provide support to my student's needs in terms of their welfare relating to their diverse profiles.I attended the GAD CODE webinar to understand this.

2. Implement teaching strategies that are responsive to the learners’ linguistic, cultural, socio-economic and religious backgrounds.

Fortunately for me, I have never experience having a non-responsive learner. However, I noticed that it's always the same set of students who are answering. So, in this class, you will notice that I am enforcing everyone to make sure their cameras are open, so I know they're still listening and I still got their full attention in our class discussion.

3. Use strategies responsive to learners with disabilities, giftedness and talents.

Having experienced the challenges of a student with special needs, I made sure to play on the strengths of each students by carefully crafting the rubrics of their Performance Tasks. I designed it, so that students have the liberty to be as creative as they want and not limited with mechanics or rules. I found this strategy effective since students are able to really display their strengths in their output.

4. Demonstrate understanding of the special educational needs of learners in difficult circumstances, including: geographic isolation; chronic illness; displacement due to armed conflict, urban resettlement or disasters; child abuse and child labor practices.

I attended the Safe Spaces Code webinar to understand and to know how to respond when a need arises in my classroom environment. To know the needs of each students experiencing hardship will help them in difficult situations.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that are inclusive of learners from indigenous groups.

in one of our Synchronous Sessions, we discussed the Indigenous Theatre of the Philippines. I empowered my students to know and learn about the different ethnic groups in the country and helped them understand of their culture and creative traditions. By doing so, I was able to keep a learning environment safe for any student who's sharing the same background. Letting them feel that they are represented in class.

SYNTHESIS

This domain is important to always consider in delivering instructions and crafting activities for the students since it is my job to know my students' background. Based on my experience, I noticed the difference among my students in every grade level that I handled. No size fits all, thus I always adjusted my strategies based on my students demographics and capabilities. I wasn't able to proficiently attain some of the indicators included in this domain, simply because the students I handled were not too diverse in nature compared with the standards needed in this domain. But, then again I can improve more and do innovative changes for my future teaching experience to attain these needed competencies.

DOMAIN 4

CURRICULUM & PLANNING

1. Prepare developmentally sequenced teaching and learning processes to meet curriculum requirements.

This is a MEDIA Module I created for PNU-ITL

2. Identify learning outcomes that are aligned with learning competencies.

By identifying the key skills that needs to be developed in each lesson, I can guarantee that the students will learn at the optimum level. Targeting competencies will highlight the learner's ability to absorb lecture and discussions in class.

4. Seek advice concerning strategies that can enrich teaching practice.

Meeting with Supervising Teacher. She encourages usto do our best in all three teaching demonstrations. She reminded us to discuss the motivational video.

5. Show skills in the selection, development and use of a variety of teaching and learning resources, including ICT, to address learning goals.

This is a MEDIA Module I made for Grade 9 Level in PNU-ITL discussing Renaissance Arts.

SYNTHESIS

This competency is one of the challenges for me since this asks huge expectations and standards. I doubt myself if my evidence is enough to reach these standards. Maybe the reason why I feel this is that I need to focus and dwell more in this area so that I will have the mastery. But then, my experiences were not bad. I just need to work more because I know I can show more. I also realized the importance of mentorship that came from my more knowledgeable individuals who really work on the ground like my CT and supervisor who are always there to share their expertise, assist and help us because I cannot do it on my own.

DOMAIN 5

ASSESSMENT & REPORTING

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the design, selection, organization and use of diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies consistent with curriculum requirements.

I usually use Google Form to conduct Summative Assessments to my learners.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and evaluation of learner progress and achievement using learner attainment data.

Analyzing how my learners performed in their summative assessments gives me a hint on how to approach their learning competencies in our next class discussion. Doing a SWOT analysis in to identify Strengths, Weakness, Threats, and Opportunities in learning is helpful.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of providing timely, accurate and constructive feedback to improve learner performance.

As much as possible, I want to stay objective in providing my students feedback. This will allow me and the students to learn constructively in the feedback given, and for them to apply it on the next tasks. I also encourage them using personalized statements highlighting what went well in their performance.

4. Demonstrate familiarity with a range of strategies for communicating learner needs, progress and achievement.

Since I am limited only to reporting the learner's progress to my Supervising Teacher, I only conduct online consultations with her. Through this I can call her attention to learners who might be having challenges in terms of meeting the deadlines and submitting requirements.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of assessment data as feedback in teaching and learning practices and programs.

Before I start my class, I always do an Icebreaker activity where students can get points. This point system helps me understand and recognize their learning. By adding a reward system, the students perform well in class discussions.

SYNTHESIS

Personally, assessment and evaluation is my favorite part because this will determine whether students learned about the lesson. Most of the pieces of evidence I put in this domain were from my Practice Teaching. I enjoyed watching the student's Performance Tasks, grading their quizzes, and reading their worksheets. It helped me understand them better and learned about their learning needs.

DOMAIN 6

COMMUNITY LINKAGES &

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT

1. Demonstrate an understanding of knowledge of learning environments that are responsive to community contexts.

I was able to incorporate the subtheme in one of our discussions with Grade 7-Maaasahan. By doing this, they learned about the world they live in and understand its characteristics.

2. Seek advice concerning strategies that build relationships with parents/guardians and the wider community.

Since I am not able to attend any Parent-Teacher conferences, I included our coaching and improvement session with Prof. Buhain and Grade7-Maaasahan during the end our class. They feedback sessions like this promotes and build relationships between Students and Teachers.

3. Demonstrate awareness of existing laws and regulations that apply to the teaching profession, and become familiar with the responsibilities specified in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.

Familiarizing myself with the Code of Ethics of Professional Teacher will help me understand the boundaries and grounds of being a LPT.

4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of school policies and procedures to foster harmonious relationship with the wider school community.

We had a meeting with our Supervising Teacher, Prof. Buhain. She reminded us what are expected of us in terms of teaching the students of PNU-ITL. She wanted to make sure that we are aware on what proper behavior and decorum to display while teaching in the institute.

SYNTHESIS

To draw attention to the young and help them grow civic awareness, I take advantage of every opportunity to connect learning in context with community engagement. By becoming aware of the conventions and rules, as well the standards of being a teacher, we, as educators can uphold them to the best of our abilities.

DOMAIN 7

PERSONAL GROWTH & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPEMENT

1. Articulate a personal philosophy of teaching that is learner-centered.

With a teaching philosophy centered in my learning, I can say that I made sure to teach them something new everyday.

2. Demonstrate behaviors that uphold the dignity of teaching as a profession by exhibiting qualities such as caring attitude, respect and integrity.

During my final teaching demonstration, I noticed that some of my students are still shy. This is why I encouraged them to use the Zoom Chat Box to share their insights in class. It helped them open up more in class.

3. Seek opportunities to establish professional links with colleagues.

Florayde Ken P. Bernardez

CHARLIE P. GREGORIO

I attended a webinar conducted at the University of the Philippines Diliman with the Theme: Creative Industries for Sustainable Development: Imaging, Managing, and Imagining.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of how professional reflection and learning can be used to improve practice.

The Supervising Teacher helped me to improve personally by providing feedback and corrections during our meetings. This guided me in making sure that all materials shown in class is accurate.

5. Demonstrate motivation to realize professional development goals based on the Philippine Standards for Teachers.

Led by PNU-ITL Director Dr. Montebon, the SECRA webinar enabled teachers to better understand the relationship of Ghana, Thailand, and Philippines and the projects that they're conducting in the Philippines.

SYNTHESIS

I know that I need to put an extra effort into this domain. I know that it is not enough. I need to learn and experience more, since this is part of my personal values. I am not settling for less, if I could do more, then I will. While filling up this domain I figured out that I need to expand my networks, I need to uphold more of my teaching philosophy, then look and grab opportunities for personal growth and professional development.

Retrospection

Line stroke illustration

Practice Teaching is a monumental stage in every educator's academic career. Here we will finally test whether we really have what it takes to be a teacher. It will give us an idea of the things we need to improve on and be better at. As a 21st-Century Educator, one of another challenge that post as a threat in our Practice Teaching is the pandemic. In this reflection essay, I'll share the things that I learned from the school I was assigned in, my mentor, the learners, and myself. Discoveries are often uncovered through a particularly challenging situation, and surely, being a teacher practicing is one of them.

Choosing the best school to do my Practice Teaching at. Indeed, choosing a school I could possibly assigned at will have a huge impact on how I will perform during my Practice Teaching journey. For our class, we are given 3 options. Unfortunately, none of the schools given was feasible for my situation. With me being blind and situated in the farther side of the province, I cannot opt in to do my practice teaching time on-site. I have to find a way and look for a school that would best cater my needs and situation. The first thing that came to mind is the Philippine National School for the Blind. Unfortunately, even if they're conducting online classes, teachers are required to conduct their classes on-site. With this, PNSB has been scratched off of my list. Fortunately, the Philippine Normal University - Institute of Teaching and Learning opened its doors for me with Dr. Montebon's approval of my circumstance and condition. I am beyond thankful for this exception that Dr. Montebon extended to me.

Leading to the weeks of my first demonstration was when my Pinning Ceremony commenced. Easily, it was one of the highlights of my teaching career if not also the beginning. I remembered ordering my PT uniform (both Yellow and Blue) signifying me wearing the colors of my Inang Pamantasan up my sleeve while teaching my learners. Since my parents were not available to attend my Pinning Ceremony, I invited my partner, so he can help me with this momentous occasion.

Meeting my mentor was a reliving moment. Learning under Prof. Buhain's supervision is definitely one, if not the best thing that happened in my Practice Teaching journey. She's patient and understanding to me all throughout the stages of learning. She is systematic and very vocal on what she wants to see in my outputs. She wants me to deliver and setting me up to succeed. She has also been very subjective when giving feedback on what I should do to make my teaching techniques better the next time. She nurtured my practice by sharing her best practices. Keeping an open mind, I learned a lot from my supervising teacher.

Meeting my learners for the first time is another thing I am looking forward to. This is the first time I get to have my own set of students, not shared with other teachers (I used to sharing students during our Field Studies course). This time, it's just me and my learners. Questions rose from this. (1) Am I capable to do this alone? (2) Can I use what I learned from previous years and use this opportunity to be a testing ground on how to manage my classroom?

Teaching demonstrations gave me an inkling on how in real-life teaching is. It also gave me an opportunity to decide what strategies to use and when to use them in class. This experience is eye-opening. Through this learning opportunity I was able to stand alone only depending on my skills and the feedback I am receiving from my supervising teacher. I experienced and learned about the types of students and able to control my biases. I learned how to keep the classroom environment a safe space foe everyone to learn and thrive. Outside the classroom environment, although online, I was able to lead my learners to learn independently by assigning Asynchronous tasks. Reading and listening to through their outputs and answers gave me an incredible amount of joy and pride. Joy that my learners are able to deliver results, and pride because I was able to effectively share. Overall, I am a proud Practice Teacher and meeting my Grade 7 Maaasahan is the best thing that happened in my Practice Teaching journey.

Capping the process, I want to thank all of the people who helped me prepare for my journey to become a teacher. I want to take this opportunity send a message to aspiring teachers that: (1) You have to decide when to become a teacher and when to become a gatekeeper. (2) Not everyday you can give your best, but still try. This amazing journey has taught me so many lessons I will bring with me on the next steps to becoming the teacher I want to be. My heart if grateful to everyone has been a part of this yet another milestone.
